Buddha: His Words on Spiritual Matters

A Selection of Spiritual Quotes from Buddha with Commentary

Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” ~Buddha

Peace, war, strife, and everything else is outside of us. But what we see, what we pay attention to, what affects us, is determined by what is within. This does not mean we should look only within for answers. It does mean we need to look within as well as without.

The Physical Body

Your body is precious. It is our vehicle for Awakening. Treat it well.” ~Buddha

Many make the mistake of believing that the body is of no importance to the spiritual person. But the spiritual person can accomplish more, and do things better, with a strong, healthy body. It is hard to stay focused on spiritual practices when you have a tooth ache, headache, or sore back. The spirit is bay far the more important, but the body does matter.

Inward calm cannot be maintained unless physical strength is constantly and intelligently replenished.” ~Buddha

When the body is sick and weak, it is hard to maintain inner peace. Not only because of physical aches and pains, but also because it affects the mind and makes us desire spiritual things, the things that can truly save us, less.

Spiritual Growth

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened.” ~Buddha

Share your Light, your truth, your love with others, and you lose nothing. When enough people do this, we will be living in a world of truth and Light.

No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.” ~Buddha

This is true, but is does not mean that we don’t get help from others. Angels and Beings of Light help us all the time. And ultimately only God can give us that final link that creates our Oneness with All. Still, we must be the ones to follow the path, others can’t do it for us.

A man should first direct himself in the way he should go. Only then should he instruct others.” ~Buddha

It should be obvious that a person cannot teach that which he does not know, yet today we have many who are not in the least bit enlightened, running phony spiritual schools which are nothing more than money-making scams. The sad thing is that these school often get far more students than the legitimate ones because they usually offer a simple path that just doesn’t work.

The Spiritual Path

A jug fills drop by drop.” ~Buddha

That is not always the case, but it is true when we are talking about spiritual growth. Many seek instant enlightenment which is found only in fantasy novels. Real enlightenment is a gradual process that takes years.

Endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines, but it is to the one who endures that the final victory comes.” ~Buddha

This goes well with the previous quote. Since true enlightenment comes slowly, one must have patience and endurance. Patience, because it is easy to give up without it. Endurance because it takes hard work to stay on the path. We have probably all seen a version of the drawing of a man digging for a treasure and giving up just inches shy of it. So we need to have endurance. Of course, we must also make sure we are digging toward a treasure and not a cesspool.

However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act upon them?” ~Buddha

The answer, of course, is no good at all. If someone gives you great advice on buying and selling stock, the advice will not make you one cent if you don’t act upon it. Likewise, knowing the means to awaken the spirit and soul does no good at all if you don’t act on it.
