Surrender – Let It Happen! The Power of Mindfully Letting Go
By Audra McClelland | Submitted On January 17, 2016
A phrase caught my ear the other day and made me giggle: “Some people learn to surrender when they travel to India because many things don’t work as they should there. So they have to practice allowing, because if they don’t allow, they become very unhappy.” (Listen to Eckhart Tolle’s Gateway to Now series on Spotify. It’s straight forward and full of insight.)
Having recently returned from a 6 month journey around India, Bali, and Thailand, I can relate to the woes of adapting to life in developing nations. It’s a beautiful mess, and it can test even the most saintly in patience. Thank goodness I was staying in ashrams and learning deeper techniques in yoga and meditation. It would have been easy to lose it without those tools in my spiritual belt.
Our Guruji at the ashram would often say, “Let it happen!” repeatedly to us during our meditations. It is his way of creating a safe space for the process of meditation to unfold. If a deep urge to laugh or cry comes up, that is acceptable. If the body wants to move or dance of its own accord, better not to suppress anything. Let it happen!
Now, “Let it happen” is far different from “Make it happen.” “Let it happen” comes from the heart and from a powerful inner force that Indian yogis refer to as Kundalini Shakti. “Make it happen” comes from the mind and from the ego, that pesky voice that tells us we need to achieve more, do more, and burn ourselves into exhaustion trying to get ahead or keep up. The ego would have us believe that these things are important, when in reality, ego satisfaction is as temporary as the material objects that we gain from its fulfillment.
Meditation has the power to show us who we are beyond the ego, the false self that builds its identity on temporary and worldly things. The simple phrase, “I am That,” reminds us that we are eternal beings, beyond all of the nonsense that competes for our daily attention, sometimes at the expense of our peace of mind.
So, when my car broke down for good, at a time when I’m completely broke from traveling, did I worry? Nope. I drank a chai, made a few phone calls, then started walking. I treated it like a game,”let’s see where this will take me.” If I can walk across Bangkok in a day (which I did, twice), surely I can survive a long walk in my own hometown. I stopped to buy vegetables at a street market, which really did make me feel like I was back in Asia. And there, just across the street from the lot where I left my car, someone offered me a ride home. Two weeks later, my car is still scrap, but I’ve managed to make my way around and get to work every day in a city that has abysmal public transportation. I have found gratitude in beautiful bicycle rides in one of the most stunningly picturesque fall seasons we have ever been graced with in the Midwest. I have been humbled by the kind efforts of friends and family who have offered me rides and encouragement. I am letting go of the desire to attend social events, and feeling grateful when it does work out that I can be among friends. Without attachment, I am learning to adapt to life without four wheels, and remaining open to more sustainable alternatives. It isn’t easy, but when we are disciplined in our willingness to surrender, we can alter our experience from within rather than internally resisting what is already happening. This is the Power of Surrender (maybe Eckhart Tolle’s next audio release?).
So, next time your car breaks down, you lose your wallet, or you rip the crotch of your pants wide open while demonstrating yoga splits (hopefully not in front of a class!), remember, you are not your things, your money, your image, or your body. You are not even your mind. You are That which transcends the nonsense. Let it happen!
